Losing a tooth to an injury, a dental infection, or gum disease can be incredibly debilitating for your confidence and your dental health. But what if we told you there’s a tooth replacement solution that mimics the function of a real tooth, and its appearance too? Dental implants can provide these advantages and are considered the next best thing to a real tooth. We offer dental implants as part of our service as a dentist in Derby.
A dental implant is a biocompatible titanium post that functions as a replacement for a missing tooth root from within the gum line and jaw.
In this piece, we’ll discuss why dental implants are a worthwhile investment for the future of your oral health, and your emotional wellbeing and confidence.
Dental implants are the only treatment out there that can protect the jawbone from receding. Once they have healed, (usually after 3-9 months) a connection is made with the jawbone via a process called osseointegration. This is the process whereby the jawbone wraps itself around the implant, fusing with it to forge a biocompatible marriage.
The jaw readily accepts the new replacement titanium tooth root as if it were a brand new tooth root (the success rate for this process is over 95%).
Once the implant and jawbone have united, your jawbone will be protected from resorption. This is the process characterised by jawbone shrinkage due to a lack of stimulation teeth would usually provide. With this stimulation restored, the jawbone is shielded from aesthetic changes which can lead to facial ageing, including a protruding chin and hollowed cheek area.
In short, dental implants protect your facial structures from bone atrophy, preserving optimal facial volume and structure, both of which are synonymous with youth. With your jawbone protected from resorption, lines and wrinkles are also less likely to become accentuated (jawbone resorption can cause the skin to sag).
Unlike dentures, implants are a fixed unit within the jaw, so there’s no risk of them slipping and sliding around when you’re enjoying your favourite foods.
Once your implant has healed, an abutment is a connecting element that holds your crown firmly in place. Enhanced chewing function can result in improved nutrition, as you will be better equipped to break foods down into manageable, digestible chunks.
Your implant will also give you free rein to eat foods varying in texture, including tougher and sticker foods. Missing teeth can make breaking down tougher foods like steak, toffee, caramel and starchy breads like baguettes and bagels a real challenge.
Once your dental implant has healed, you won’t have any restrictions when you’re in your favourite restaurant, taking the stress out of going out to eat and giving you much more flexibility.
Implants are completely autonomous – they don’t require the support of other teeth to stay in position.
The opposite is true of dental bridges, which require a crown to be bonded on a natural tooth. This crown then supports the false tooth placed within the gap in your teeth.
The disadvantage of this is the pressure it places on natural teeth, whilst implants do not exert this on the teeth sitting on either side. They are a sustainable option for your mouth as a whole, and unlike dentures, they do not irritate the gum line over time.
Living with gaps in your teeth can have many different repercussions on your everyday wellbeing. Implants do a fantastic job of addressing many of these consequences.
